We tested 21 web agencies for AI visibility. Result: 20 out of 21 are invisible to AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. Only one agency scores above 25/100 on AI readiness. The industry average sits at 11 points.
We wanted to know: How visible are web agencies to AI systems? Not to Google — but to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. The assistants that more and more people use to find service providers.
For this, we had Claude Cowork — Anthropic's autonomous AI agent — create an independent analysis. Normally we work with our own system: over 20 AI agents that optimize, test, and improve our website around the clock. For this comparison, we deliberately wanted an external, neutral evaluation.
What We Tested
Six criteria determine whether an AI assistant can understand and use your website:
1. llms.txt — A file specifically prepared for language models. Like a README, but for AI instead of developers. Explains in structured form what the company does, which services it offers, and how to get in touch.
2. agents.json — Machine-readable tool definitions. This allows an AI agent to not just read, but act: book appointments, request quotes, browse portfolios.
3. Open API — Structured JSON endpoints that an AI system can call directly. No HTML interpretation needed.
4. A2A Protocol — Agent-to-Agent communication. An AI system can talk directly to the website's system without a human in between.
5. Schema.org / Structured Data — JSON-LD markup that tells search engines and AI systems what's on the page: company, services, pricing, reviews, people.
6. AI Chatbot — An integrated assistant that answers visitor questions and serves as an interface between humans and AI systems.
